Submission Guidelines

Following is a list of general guidelines for submitting poem manuscripts to The New York Quarterly. Follow these guidelines carefully to ensure your poems receive full consideration by our screeners.

1. Include no more than 3-5 poems per submission.
Because of the large volume of submissions to NYQ, and our desire to give every poet a fair reading, our screeners cannot spend too much time during a given screening session on one poet's work at the expense of many others whose poems are waiting to be reviewed. If you have a large number of poems you'd like considered, please spread them out over several weeks in groups of 3 to 5 and they will all be read.

or mail submissions to:

The New York Quarterly
P.O. Box 2015
Old Chelsea Station
New York, NY 10113
2. Proofread your poems before sending them to us.
Misspelled words and typos may bias screeners against your work.
3. Please indicate if your poems are being submitted elsewhere.
We generally only pull poems from consideration if there is a conflict with another journal at the time of acceptance, but it is still nice to know.
4. DO NOT SEND PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED WORK.
Previously published work is any work that has been through an editorial process and has appeared or has been accepted to appear either in print or online.
5. DO NOT SEND UNFINISHED WORK.
Please only submit work that is ready for publication. If a poem is accepted it will be published as is. Any revisions to an accepted work will subject it to editorial scrutiny and could possibly result in its exclusion from publication.
6. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with mail submissions.
We can't send a response and/or your poems back unless you do. For international submissions ONLY: do not send postal coupons - request an email reply.
7. Make sure the stamped, self-addressed envelope can contain your submitted poems.
If you send an envelope which cannot hold your submissions, your poems will be discarded.
8. Include contact information on each poem.
This goes for either mail or online submissions. Please place your name, address and email address on each poem submitted. Poems continuing onto a second page should be indicated as follows:
Name
Hidden Sunrise, page 2
no stanza break.
9. Please don't query us as to when a poem will be considered or published.
We have a pretty good track record on these things, but we also usually carry a large backlog of acceptances. Poems are screened and responses are mailed usually within 5 to 6 weeks of our receiving your submissions.

Submission Tips

NYQ is not able to send feedback or comments on poem submissions. Screening some 50,000 submissions per year takes enough time?and if we sent comments back on poem submissions, that would get us into mail order workshopping which is not our purpose. The best gauge of the kind of poetry we're looking for is any issue of The New York Quarterly. A more complete discussion of our NYQ screening procedures appears in issue #45 and in our Poet Handbook.
